Franklin Delano Roosevelt told a graduating class in 1930, ”The country needs and, unless I mistake its temper, the country demands bold, persistent experimentation. It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something.” If you see the issues confronting your community and are compelled to try something to better the situation, an online master’s in public administration may be a good fit for you. This list of the top 50 online MPA programs should help you decide which program offers the area of specialization you require.

Online degrees are available at your schedule and convenience. They can be a vital solution to people with professional and family responsibilities. But they require a slightly different skill set than traditional college. Most colleges offer a brief assessment on their website to gauge your level of readiness for online study. Distance education also requires a technical component, but if you were able to access this article without assistance, you probably have that angle covered.

In compiling this list of the top 50 online MPA programs, we looked at several factors. Tuition value and university prestige were primary at ten possible points each. The relevancy of the curriculum to the demands of the field was good for an additional eight possible points. And five possible points each were awarded for: the program being accredited by the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration, national recognition of the excellence of their public affairs program and exceptional students services available for online learners. In the case of a tie on points, schools were ranked in order of decreasing tuition.

All enrollment and student to faculty ratio numbers are from the National Center for Education Statistics, a service of the US government. The tuition figure listed in the bullet point above the school review is the reported out of state tuition number from this source. Any tuition figure quoted in the school review is from that school’s website and may differ from the amount reported to the government source.
